The Spiritual Arts Foundation
Iona Leigh

Iona is a professionally trained vocalist with a Masters in Performance and Media Health (Distinction) and a BMus (Hons) First Class Music Degree in Popular Music Performance from London’s renowned Vocaltech School of Music. Iona has recorded and performed as a solo artist, session singer, harpist and backing vocalist throughout London between 2003 – 2009, in San Francisco and Los Angeles during 2007, and across Scotland between 2010 – 2015. Iona has recorded, performed and worked with many professional musicians and music companies. Iona loves collaborating with new artists and is available for hire as a session singer, backing vocalist, harpist, songwriter, lyricist.

Iona’s unique sound has been described as gorgeous vocals floating over a folk tinged musical backdrop, with an intermingled sense of both tradition and the contemporary. While her music is cleverly catchy, it washes over the listener with a serenity that is rare in the modern pop world, and the stories contained within her songs come to life with foot stomping rhythms and vivid lyrical imagery.

Iona is a significant UK singer songwriter, drawing inspiration from her unique life experience and wonder of nature. Growing up in an Eco village in the Scottish highlands before embarking on a music career in London has given her a fresh perspective. With a voice that soothes the soul and lyrics that speak straight to the heart, Iona draws comparisons to artists like Jewel, Tori Amos and Sinead O,Connor.

Iona works as a songwriter, session singer, vocal arranger and backing vocalist. She is always looking for new artists and companies to work with and enjoys a new challenge! Iona most recently began working for an online music publisher that provides vocal samples for writers and producers online.

Iona recently returned to live in Findhorn (the spiritual eco-village she grew up in), where she is writing, recording and performing again, and is planning on releasing a new album in the summer/autumn of 2015/16. At the same time, Iona is available for weddings and business functions as a Celtic/Folk/Pop Singer and Harpist.

American born and bred but settled in the UK for many years, he is known as a composer, songwriter, concert and session musician, modern and orchestral arranger/conductor, gold & platinum record producer, sound engineer/sound designer and innovator of the internationally known "Sacred Chants" series of music CDs. Many writers, directors and famous inspirational thinkers have used Craig's music in their work: Ekhart Tolle, Anthony Robbins, Shiva Rea, Deepak Chopra, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and Byron Bays, to name a few. He is one of the few composers trained and steeped in three major musical traditions of the world: Indian classical/fusion music, Western classical/contemporary styles, and all aspects of African music (having lived in Kenya from the ages of 20 to 23).

His diverse music career has seen him excel in record production (with numerous gold and platinum records) for international stars such as Sir Cliff Richard, Anu Malik and Sheila Walsh (whose first album, "War of Love" was produced and arranged by Craig and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1983); musical arrangements for Massive Attack, Def Leppard, Elton John, Bond; feature film soundtrack music scores (two number one UK box office hits: "Bend It Like Beckham" and"Bride & Prejudice", also: "It's a Wonderful Afterlife", "What's Cooking?" and "Bhaji on the Beach"); world music producing, performing (sitar, keyboards and African percussion) and arranging for international acts such as Manic Street Preachers, Joe Cocker, Massive Attack, Katie Melua, Def Leppard and Pascal Obispo; television music scores (BBC prime time programmes: "Five Days", "Moses Jones", "Rich Deceiver", and one the longest and most successful independent UK TV drama series, "Peak Practice") and also arranging, sitar and sound design work (for such well known composers as Danny Elfman, Gabriel Yared, Patrick Doyle, Carl Davis, John Altman, Rachel Portman, and George Fenton); and lastly, creating music for many high profile television and film advertising campaigns over the years.

Craig was nominated for a British Academy Award in 2010 for his score on the BBC drama series "Moses Jones" about Ugandan musicians struggling to survive in London, with tribal divisions in the home country spilling over on to the streets of modern London. This project spawned the Ganda Boys project, which has grown into an international fusion, performing and recording band, with Craig featured on keyboards, trumpet, guitar, voice and percussion. He is a central song-writer with the Ganda Boys along with his Ugandan colleagues, Denis Mugagga and Danial Sewagudde.

The Queen of Uganda has said that the Ganda Boys are putting Ugandan music on the international map with their powerful songs and big world sound.

Utilising his knowledge of Indian ragas, Craig also performs regularly with his world fusion trio, At-Ma, featuring vocalist extra-ordinaire, Russell Stone, and tabla maestro, Tom Simenauer. Their music combines the delicacy of Indian ragas with mesmerising chants in creative a fusion of Sufi, shamanic and African vocal styles. A standing ovation at a capacity-filled Philharmonic Hall in Warsaw, Poland, November 2010, underlined the accessibility and popularity of this highly original, spontaneous and evocative music.

Colin Elliott and his band, ‘Live Issue’ literally made history in Nashville by becoming the first band from Ireland and only the second group from the British Isles to perform on the stage of the famous Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Colin was later invited to appear at the Opry in a solo capacity on several subsequent occasions, including shows from the famous Ryman Auditorium. With further appearances in Opryland venues, Colin is considered somewhat of a ‘regular’ in Nashville music circles.

In July 2015 Colin and Live Issue again toured the United States and fulfilled a busy schedule of concert invitations including venues in North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia as well as hosting the famous Ernest Tubb Midnight Jamboree in Nashville, which was broadcast across the world on WSM Radio and Music City Television.

Colin Elliott’s Christian faith influences his life and music. He gave his life to the Lord when he was only 8 years old through the ministry of evangelist, Dick Saunders and is currently one of the hardest working Gospel singers in the United Kingdom. Colin has been involved in Gospel music both in groups and as a solo artist for over 30 years. He started singing at the age of fourteen and has been on the road ever since. Colin was also recently appointed as secretary of the Gospel Music Association of Northern Ireland.

The last few years have seen Colin and Live Issue release their fourth album entitled “Every Road,” record a one hour television special broadcast on Revelation TV and release two DVDs. As well as completing several very successful tours of the United States, they opened the ‘International Country Music Festival’ at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast in March 2012.

Although Colin is heavily involved in Gospel music, he is also a school teacher and has been the Principal of Brownlee Primary School in Lisburn since 1999. As you would expect, the school offers its pupils many opportunities to develop their musical skills from an early age.

Colin and Live Issue have been credited, not only as fine representatives of Country Gospel Music, but also as ambassadors for their Christian faith and everything that is good about Northern Ireland. In 2014, Live Issue was awarded “County Gospel Band of the Year” in the Northern Ireland Gospel Music Awards. Colin was also nominated as “Worship Leader of the Year” at the same event.

Although Colin is mainly known for his singing and playing ability, both in groups and as a solo artist, he is also a respected record producer and session musician. He recorded and produced three albums for the late George Hamilton IV, the “International Ambassador of Country Music,” one of which went to number one in the New Christian Music European Gospel and Country Charts.

In 2010 Colin produced a “landmark” album for George Hamilton IV entitled “Old Fashioned Hymns and Gospel Songs for Those Who Miss Them!” This recording featured many established stars from the Grand Ole Opry and Gospel Music. During this project Colin recorded and produced songs for; Pat Boone, George Beverly Shea, Marty Stuart, Charley Pride, Charlie Louvin, Connie Smyth, Joanne and Tommy Cash, Ricky Skaggs, and many more. Production on this album took place both in Northern Ireland and at Lamon Records in Nashville. One of the songs entitled, “I’m Using My Bible for a Roadmap” was nominated for a prestigious Dove Award and Colin travelled to Atlanta for the ceremony as part of his US Easter tour in 2011.

Over the years Colin has recorded many albums and appeared on countless BBC and independent radio shows. He has also featured on television programmes in Northern Ireland, the UK and America. These appearances have provided important opportunities for Colin to share his faith and music with an ever increasing audience.

Colin’s musical experiences have been very wide and varied over the past quarter of a century, and this is well illustrated in his song writing ability. Although his repertoire contains dozens of familiar songs, Colin also performs many which he has penned himself. His songs are regularly requested on radio shows and many have inspired people throughout Ireland and across the world.

Colin’s solo singing has been in great demand in recent years as he has travelled to many churches throughout the UK and America bringing the good news of the Gospel in song. His musical style can merge repertoires of country, worship and contemporary music to suit any audience or age group.

Carol Lee Sampson

Carol was born in Jersey, Channel Islands. She wrote her first song at just 9 years old, began piano lessons at 11, and guitar at 14. Her first public performances were as a young teenager, taking part in numerous youth events and concerts.

At 19, she entered an inter-island talent contest and came runner-up, so with her prize money and some money that her Dad had left her (he had died a few years earlier) she invested in a PA system. Soon after this, she was invited to sing regularly at a local hotel.

The following year she progressed to being part of a duo cabaret act called 'Just Friends' - and spent that summer season performing at different hotels on the island.

Shortly after her arrival to the Midlands back in the 80's, she began the club circuit, then landed a residency at the Celebrity Restaurant, Birmingham, where she continued working three nights a week for four years.

The next chapter of her career saw her teaming up with friend and fellow 'songstress' Zara Ashton', and as 'Girl Talk' they travelled around the clubs and pubs of Worcestershire and Gloucestershire.

The Old Smithy Recording Studios, Kempsey, Worcester, is where Carol gained many hours of experience singing on radio jingles, adverts and backing vocals for different recording projects.

1990 saw Carol move to West Sussex, where she became part of the music ministry at Colin Urquhart's Kingdom Faith Bible College, and it was during this time that she wrote many songs for corporate church worship, and recorded numerous CD's, as well as travelling around the UK, leading worship for conferences and church weekends. She's also had the privilege of ministering in the Czech Republic, Belgium, America, Norway, Spain, Gibralta and Burundi.

Carol played in the worship band alongside Dave Bilbrough, for the annual 'Faith Camp' in 1991, at Peterborough Showground. She then went on to lead the worship at those camps for the next four consecutive years 1992 to 1995, attended by an average of five thousand people.

It was in the spring of 1995 that she was approached by Kingsway Music, which led to a publishing deal and a worship album, entitled 'You Alone Are God', which was under her former name of Carol Owen.

She gave birth to her son Jack back in 2002, and since then has been writing again - many of her songs reflecting on life, and relationships, as well as continuing to write for corporate worship.

She is currently heading up the music team at Eden Centre, in Malvern, Worcester, where she has now settled.

Film and TV composer Steven Faux explains how he came to produce The Psalms Project, an epic three volume musical interpretation of the Psalms.

"The Psalms Project brings together the two things I do professionally in life: composing music for media and being an ordained minister in the Anglican Church. But I've always found the Psalms puzzling. All those sudden and extreme changes in emotion are difficult to understand. When studying theology for ordination, one of the Old Testament courses involved reading theologian Walter Brueggemann on the Psalms. He sees the Psalms as songs and laments that are rooted in life as it really is. So they mirror our journey, as we move through seasons of well-being, to times of pain and anger, and then perhaps to experiences of surprising new life. All this appealed to me as a composer, because a typical movie or story plot follows a similar trajectory: stability, to conflict, and finally to resolution or closure. Surely dramatic plots capture our imagination because they mirror real life, even if there is plenty of escapist fantasy thrown in! So I have applied an unashamedly plot-like structure to these Psalm settings, both within individual poems, and across the whole."

The Psalms Project by Steven Faux is a contemporary journey through the vivid landscape of the Psalms, told in the musical language of feature films. We are drawn into a world of joy and praise, danger and abandonment and, finally, restoration and affirmation.

Volumes I and II: Orchestral parts are performed by the COOL Orchestra (Chamber Orchestra of London) in Abbey Road Studio 2, London. Orchestration and conducting is by Alastair King, orchestrator and conductor on British TV’s Downton Abbey. Singers and instrumental soloists were recorded in Bath, England.

Volume III: Following its début performance in Bath Abbey, The Psalms Project Volume III is now available. The evening featured music by renowned orchestra Bath Philharmonia and vocals by acclaimed chamber choir Bath Camerata. A huge thank you to everyone who came along and made it a wonderful evening!

The Psalms Cantata: Having taken part in the performance of the Psalms Project music on opening night of the Bath International Music Festival 2013, Bath’s prestigious county youth choir, Cantilena, decided to record their own CD of the Psalms Project: The Psalms Cantata.

"I want to commend ‘The Psalms Project’, composed by Steven Faux. In twelve contemporary pieces of music it takes you on an extraordinary journey through some of the first forty Psalms. As I listened to the opening performance in St. Michael’s Bath, I found myself deeply moved. Just for a little while I realised that I had stepped aside and paid attention once again to the mystery and miracle of God. I had been refreshed and renewed!" – Rt Revd Peter Maurice, Bishop of Taunton.

His only objective is to provide songs in many different music genres for any Artists/Artistes/Worship Bands etc. willing to take the songs and put their own interpretation on them. The range of genres covers Rock/Ballad/Reggae/Dance/Classical/Electronic
Watch his videomix to get an idea of the variety of songs available.

My name is Richard Birch - nickname Ricky. I was brought up in Darwen, which is a small town in Lancashire, England, close to the home of the best football team in the world, Blackburn Rovers!! I attended Darwen Vale High School, and have always lived close by, even though I have now emigrated to Bolton (8 miles away).

I have worked in music all my life, but have always had an ambition to write my own album. Once I started I could not stop and hence 4 years later I have written not one but 5 albums of material, all with an interrelated spiritual lyrical theme, but with vastly different musical styles. I hope many of you out there will use some of these tracks as a base to do your own thing with them.

THE SUPPLICATA - The Supplicata is a set of modern prayers written by Richard Birch, influenced by the 15 most prayed about subjects in our world today, beautifully narrated by the soothing voice of TV presenter Charles Foster, to the calming textures of the orchestral and electronic music compositions of Richard Birch.

GLAD TO BE ALIVE - A collection of 12 original, rock based, praise and worship songs. Written, sung and produced by Richard Birch.

Judith Silver

Judith started her professional life as a musician in 1996 as a singer/songwriter, playing in small venues, mostly around London. Her first performance of original songs was at Bunjies Folk Club and she developed from there to perform at a wide variety of venues such as the Mean Fiddler, The Borderline and the Rock Garden.

From her beginnings as a guitar-focused composer, with the odd piece for piano thrown in, she began creating harmony songs for groups to sing around the time she started leading singing workshops, both within and outside the Jewish community.

An emphasis on joy, companionship, connection and inspiration runs throughout Judith’s work. Whether performing or teaching, composing or leading music in services, she always brings her own deep experience of the power and potential in singing and her passion to share these with others.

Her conviction that no-one should be denied these gifts means that her groups are open, welcoming and accepting. They focus on the simple enjoyment of learning songs and co-creating sounds, being together, celebrating and supporting, creating community.
